STS Guardian Filter

In essence, our signature product, the STS Guardian filter, was developed to protect our youth from exposure to inappropriate web sites. This is typically related to Pornography. But a detailed understanding of the millions and millions of web sites, reveals that Pornography is not the only evil too readily available in the Wold Wide Web.

There are innumerable topics, (eg drugs, hate, crime, weapons, etc) that many parents desire to prevent access by their children. STS Guardian has defined over 50 categories, and nearly 30 specific protocols that can be controlled by the Parent and modified differently for each child (if desired).

Yes, there are dozens of competing products in the market - generally known as “Filters”. But they all share the same technical architecture. They are software programs that reside on the user’s computer. Our technical approach is different. It is not a resident program on the users computer. It operates similar to a ’driver’. In simple terms, it intercepts all outgoing requests from the use’s computer, and runs it through a program that resides on a central server in a secure location with our Network Operating Center (NOC).

Why is this a preferred methodology? First, because the competitors use resident software programs, they can be deleted or are easily circumvented by our clever youth. Moreover, they tend to have about 2,000,000 ‘bad’ sites that are preloaded into the database that also resides on the users computer. Not only does this take up considerable storage space, but this is also one of the key reasons that they tend to have a significant impact (time delays) when surfing the net. Each request must first be ‘approved’ by the Filter’s internal data base.

Some Filter Programs do a ‘real-time’ scan of each web site before they allow it to be displayed in the monitor. Typically, they scan for embedded key words or tags usually found on pornography sites. But, as you can imagine, not all pornographic sites use these descriptive terms in there sites = specifically to ‘trick’ the Filters. The result is as expected - the Filter will not work.

Because the STS Guardian Filter resides on a dedicated sever, it is both FAST, and our internal database has nearly  2 billion categorized web sites. Also of great importance, we add an additional 2,000,000 web sites to our database every day! As you can imagine, Software Filters are typically less than 50 million in their database, and are rarely, if ever, updated by parents.
